Despite growing legal restrictions in many states against employers asking about salary history, it’s possible some may still do so. In such instances, The Washington Post recommends a strategy of deflection. Candidates can respond by stating they first need a clearer understanding of the job’s duties before discussing appropriate compensation. One suggested way to phrase this is: “Before we talk about salary, I’d like to learn more about the responsibilities involved in this role so we can arrive at a fair figure.”
